Papers, ca. 1906-1948.

The collection contains the papers of James B. Whitfield, most of which deal with Florida history. It includes some correspondence, including letters from Theodore Roosevelt, William D. Bloxham, R.A. Gray, and Millard F. Caldwell. Whitfield's manuscripts touch on numerous aspects and incidents of Florida history. There are also galley proofs of some of his manuscripts and Florida history articles by other authors. There are photographs of the State Supreme Court Justices, James B. Whitfield, governmental activities, Prince and Princess Murat, and aspects of Florida history. Newspaper clippings document Whitfield's career from appointment to retirement. There are also some of Whitfield's publications on legal issues and various other publications, such as directories, law journals, and an Attorney General report of 1903. Also included in the collection are numerous awards, honors, and citations presented to Whitfield during the course of his career.

R.A. Gray (1882-1975) was born on August 2, 1882 near Concord, Ga. William Dunnington Bloxham was born in Leon County, Florida on July 9, 1835. He attended William and Mary College, graduating in 1855 with a law degree. Originally of Wayne County, North Carolina, James B. Whitfield came to Florida as a boy, when his father started a cotton plantation in Leon County. He was educated at the West Florida Seminary in Tallahassee and at the University of Virginia, where he received the bachelor of law in 1886.
